Weather, weather, weather …

Cosmoledo Atoll in February, 2022

The weather forecast for our week on Cosmoledo wasn’t too bad at all just before we set off. However, when we got there, things looked a bit different. The atoll is located in a corner of the Indian Ocean where weather conditions can change very, very quickly. We were confronted with the troughs of two cyclones in the Indian Ocean and every day was a struggle as a result. Apart from fine weather on the first day, it was extremely changeable. Sun, storms, clouds, thunderstorm, rain – frequently at hourly intervals.

My fishing buddy Marco accompanied me on this trip. We shared a skiff and had a tremendous time. The first outing turned out to be one of those days at sea that you will never forget. The weather was fantastic and we caught a couple of GTs in the morning when suddenly a magnificent specimen surfaced between the coral heads. This GT attacked the fly on the very first cast but failed to hook up. After a second attack the hook set and a touch-and-go fight commenced between the coral heads. This huge fish tried time and again to seek refuge in the corals and, thanks to our expertise, numerous boat manoeuvres and a great measure of luck, we were able to boat the fish after a 20-minute fight. At this juncture many thanks again to our guide Brandon for his skilful handling of the boat. After a short photograph session, we released this exceptional fish which measured 126 cm in length. We were euphoric.

Due to the erratic weather (high pressure, low pressure) the following days turned out to be difficult. The fish weren’t so aggressive and, in many cases, took flight whenever they caught sight of the fly.

We had more great moments while targeting bonefish in the flats. Cosmo bones are renowned for their jumbo sizes with some reaching specimen weights.

We spent the last day fishing in the surf and were fortunate enough to catch another two trigger fish – what a finish.

Our group consisted of 12 people from various countries (USA, England, Finland, Russia, Ireland, Germany). By the end of the week everyone had caught the fish they were after.
