Praslin Island – a Paradise for the All-round Angler

The Seychelles in February.

After six days’ flyfishing on Cosmoledo and a further 2 days on Alphonse Island, I spent a week on Praslin Island which is a 15-minute flight from the main island of Mahé. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Sandro and I have been operating a 32 ft centre console charter boat on Praslin called “Frenzy”. This was a maiden voyage for me in the new boat. After the first day’s fishing I was more than reassured because the vessel sits well in the water, is perfectly organized and offers plenty of space for your fishing. The boat has 2 tuna tubes for storing bonitos and a well to keep your live baits frisky.

We steamed out to the drop off for some trolling, jigging and live-baiting which produced a wide and colourful range of all the local fish species. Although February is not regarded as a top month for billfish, we nevertheless had sailfish regularly following our teasers and were able to catch 3 of them. Pitch-bait fishing is a teamwork job with an excellent hook-up ratio and an angling method that can be addictive.

We also fished our poppers and stickbaits around the rock and submarine features of Praslin in search of GTs and dogtooth tuna. Here again, things never got boring and we were able to outsmart quite a few beautiful fish.
