Farguhar Atoll – a day for the books

Seychelles February 2023

Farquhar Atoll is the most southerly atoll in the Seychelles chain of islands lying just over 700 km to the southwest of the main island Mahé. This remote atoll has a total area of 170.5 km2, which is 18 km north to south and nine km east to west. The atoll is made up of a large ear-shaped lagoon surrounded by 10 islands, vast white sand flats, coral fingers and outcropsmmaking for a diverse and wild fishery.

Our core flats species include GT’s, bonefish, bumphead parrotfish, moustache triggerfish, yellow margin triggerfish and bluefin trevally, however many others do call Farquhar home and are possible during a trip. These include barracuda, Indo-Pacific permit, golden trevally, napoleon wrasse, bohar snapper and many more.

Our group consisted of 7 fly fishermen (2 English, 2 Russian, 1 Norwegian and my fishing partner Marco and myself). It was our first trip to Farquhar and our goal was to catch a bumphead parrotfish once. The weather cooperated quite well for this region except for 2 days with rain and storms. Overall fishing was average for the group with the exception of one very special day. In one week 7 bumpheads, 18 GT’s, 2 triggers and about 10 bonefish were caught.

Marco and I had our best day as fly fishermen. Early in the morning we both caught a Bumphead of 108 cm each. An hour later each a GT. Now all we had to do was find the Bones and do a Grand Slam on each. Around 12 noon we found a school of Bones and caught 2 of them at the same time. So we both had a Grand Slam by noon. But it should get even better. Marco caught another bone and I spotted a big Trigger which I was allowed to catch, which meant a Super Grand Slam.

As far as we know, a Grand Slam and a Super Grand Slam were caught by a boat in one day in the Seychelles was never done.  At 12 o’clock it was done and for the rest of the day we caught another good GT, Bluefins, Boharsnapper and and and – a day on the books!

In the end, everyone caught their fish, but not in large numbers. We haven’t seen that many GT’s. Fishing for Bumphead Parrotfish is something of its own and certainly has its appeal. Marko hooked 5 and got one, I hooked 3 and caught 2. The hooked fish run easily 200 meters and often there is a coral or other obstacle in the way which breaks the lines.
