Cape Verde for the all-round angler!

Speed Jigging, Slow Pitch Jigging, Live Baiting – quite apart from Marlin Fishing

July to October are regarded as the less windy months in Cape Verde and are thus eminently suitable for the all-round fisherman. On our arrival and after spending the first night in Mindelo we decided to transfer to Sao Nicolau where we joined our skipper Marco Canu and his two mates Matthew and Manti on “SAMBO”, the same vessel as last year.

Again we focused on fishing with jigs and live baits. We set up classic speed jigging tackle which was fished using the so-called slow-pitch technique. The slow-pitch method is a sure way of contacting plenty of fish around the Cape Verde Islands weighing up to 30 lbs. We were able to catch fish of up to 74 lbs. by speed jigging and live baiting. There were quite a few surprise species. This kind of angling is very entertaining so there is never a dull moment.

Marlin fishing on the way to the jigging spots

On our way to and from the hot-spots we trolled three teasers, a dredge and a lure with a hook. This enabled us to catch marlin of up to 350 lbs. A specimen fish of grander proportions attacked our teaser and took the “Big Pitch / 3 kg Amberjack”. Unfortunately, the leader got tangled around its sword which meant the hook failed to set and the marlin escaped after a short struggle – bad luck.

Live Baiting

We had 4 monster bites on our live baits. Two of the fish snapped the 130 lb line over the rocky bottom immediately after the bite. One giant (most probably a big shark) was lost about ten metres below the boat. The biggest surprise of the trip was a cubera snapper weighing a magnificent 78 lbs., a species rarely seen in Cape Verde. Local hand-line fishermen also caught amberjacks of up to 134 lbs. during the same period!

Speed Jigging und Slow Pitch Jigging

The fishing grounds around Sao Vicente, Santo Antao, Raso and Sao Nicolau have not yet been targeted by professional sport-fishing boats using these methods so surprises are inevitable.
