Cape Verde with a Twist!

Jigging, slow-pitching and baiting – guaranteed no boredom.

Cape Verde is renowned worldwide for its Atlantic Blue Marlin catches. However, during the calmer months from July to October these islands offer excellent fishing for the all-round angler – with a promise of long arms.

This is why we focused on jigs and live baits in July for a change. We fished the classic style with our speed-jigging combinations and the so-called slow pitch method. We caught endless numbers of fish with our slow-pitch gear of up to 30 lbs. Speed-jigging and live-baiting resulted in fish of over 100 lbs. There were a number of surprises in store for us as well. This kind of angling is so diversified that there was never a dull moment.

On our way to and from the hot spots we fished with three teasers, one dredge and a lure with a hook attached which resulted in our catching marlin of up to 800 lbs. – what more can an angler’s heart ask for?

Baiting (fishing with live baits)

When baiting we were frequently pushed to our limits and came off second best. This method enabled us to outsmart wahoos, tunas, trevallies, groupers and amberjacks up to 80 lbs. We used our speed-jigging combination tackle for this technique.

Night Fishing

On two days we decided to fish the sundown hours from 3 p.m. until 11 p.m. In addition to innumerable table fish this resulted in a gigantic oil-fish and we had several good bites from heavyweight fish which we were regrettably unable to exploit.

Speed Jigging and Slow Pitch Jigging

If you don’t want to exhaust yourself the slow pitch combination is the method of choice in our opinion. You get considerably more bites than with traditional speed jigging and will catch the complete range of underwater inhabitants. Speed jigging is a “little” bit more sporting and the catch rate is similar to that of slow pitching. However, if you hook a big fish you have more power for the fight – which is again an advantage with fish above the 20 kilo mark.

An Offer for the Allround Angler

As we are convinced of its potential we shall be putting a package together next season aimed at the specific needs of the all-round angler interested in this kind of fishing. The fishing spots off the islands of Sao Vicente, Santo Antao, Raso and Sao Nicolau have never been targeted by professional sport-fishing boats using these angling techniques so surprises are always on the cards. For this purpose we will also be preparing a tackle guide and distributing it to you in a couple of months’ time.
