A Hidden Gem in the Indian Ocean

Platte Island, also known as Île Platte, is a coral island in the Indian Ocean and part of the Republic of Seychelles. Located about 130 kilometers south of the main island, Mahé, it is one of the Outer Islands of Seychelles. The island stretches approximately 1.3 kilometers in length and up to 550 meters in width, covering a total area of around 0.54 square kilometers. It is surrounded by a 13-kilometer-long coral reef, which serves as a vital habitat for diverse marine life.

With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush palm forests, Platte Island offers a unique opportunity to explore an untouched ecosystem. The surrounding coral reefs and seagrass meadows are crucial breeding and mating grounds for a variety of fascinating marine species. Snorkeling and diving reveal a breathtaking underwater world, while guided tours provide deeper insights into the island’s flora and fauna.

Platte Island is also an excellent destination for fly fishing. However, as there are no local guides or skiffs available, anglers must initially explore the area on their own—a process that can take several days. The island’s diverse landscape includes sandbanks, extensive seagrass beds, and fish-rich reef zones, full of surprises. After about eight days of thorough exploration, I discovered some promising fishing spots accessible on foot or by kayak. Eventually, I was able to spot and catch some impressive fish.

One thing is certain: It won’t be long before I return to Platte Island.
