One Week of Fly Fishing for Tarpon – On the Limit!

Adrenaline, Action and Silver Kings in Trinidad

A full week of explosive takes, breathtaking jumps, and unforgettable battles: while fly fishing for tarpon in Trinidad, our angling dreams came true.
In total, we hooked 185 fish – and successfully landed 114 tarpon, including 12 giants over 100 pounds.

This fishery is not for the faint-hearted: wild jumps, blistering runs, and raw power. The tackle gets pushed to the limit – and sometimes beyond. Two broken rods, two snapped fly lines, and a destroyed reel tell the story. But that’s exactly what makes it so thrilling – pure adrenaline!

A Strong Start on the Axeman

At the beginning of the trip, I spent two days fishing with Captain Michael de Freitas and his brother Jessy aboard the Axeman.
The result: 32 tarpon hooked, 18 landed – including four fish over the 100-pound mark. The perfect start into an unforgettable week!

Double Strikes and Record Days

From day three onwards, my fishing buddy Marco joined me, and together we fished with our friends Matthew Milne and his father Wabba on their brand-new boat.
From then on, it was non-stop action: daily double strikes, spectacular jumps, and powerful fights.
Our record day: 25 tarpon landed – a personal best and a true highlight of Trinidad fly fishing.

Conclusion – What More Could an Angler Wish For?

After seven days, we stood on the dock tired but overjoyed:

  • 185 tarpon hooked
  • 114 landed
  • 12 fish over 100 pounds

A week that stretched our arms, pushed our gear to the breaking point, and created memories to last a lifetime. This is exactly what fly fishing in the Caribbean is all about!
