After I had already been to Trinidad during the pandemic in 2019 and had a sensational week of fishing with Matthew, things couldn’t get any better. Back then we traditionally fished for Tarpon with bait.

Now there was a big challenge to outsmart the Trinidad Tarpon in deep water with the fly – “fly only” was on the agenda. The goal was to catch a few smaller Tarpon and perhaps a 60-80 pounder. At the end of the week, our result exceeded all our expectations. We hooked 34 Tarpon in 5.5 days of fishing and were able to land 23 of them. All fish were released without exception. The two largest fish caught on the fly rod weighed approximately 80 and 100 lbs.

On the last day we fished with classic bait at Matthew’s special spot for monster Tarpon and caught a fish of around 140 lbs – what a finish. After a week with countless casts, two broken fly rods and long arms, I set off on the journey home to Germany.
